The sea
Beautiful and nearby beaches
The sea is very close. Also visible from the Tower's windows is a deep blue triangle over which the island of Elba stands out.
Several beaches and many coastal villages can be reached within an hour's drive. There are no major cities or ports on the coast. Marine tourism is almost always quiet and organized, without the stress of large crowds. The beaches are very well preserved and the sea is very clean.
The nearest and most convenient beaches to reach are those of Cecina, just 35 minutes away by car. They are well equipped for families, with beachfront bathhouses and restaurants, but there is also a large free beach abutting the majestic pine forest. Nightlife is also vibrant, with numerous bars, clubs and discos.
Heading north, after the great white beach of Rosignano, begins an often rocky and spectacular coastline characterized by small seaside towns such as Castiglioncello and Quercianella, perched among pine trees and rocks. Continuing toward Livorno you will find several kilometers of wonderful coastline, with cliffs of characteristic red color.
Proceeding southward, on the other hand, there is a very long uninterrupted beach from Cecina to other coastal towns including Bibbona, Donoratico, and San Vincenzo with majestic pine and holm oak forests that almost always separate the beach from towns and roads. From the promontory of Populonia, an ancient Etruscan center overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Baratti, the coast begins to be high and rocky again but you can also enjoy a long beach.
After Baratti, marine destinations require longer trips. Among these worth mentioning are the possibility of reaching the island of Elba by frequent ferries departing from the port of Piombino and the beautiful beach of Cala Violina.
